What is ?

I will try to avoid spoilers for anyone that isn't familiar with the series and may want to check it out. Devil May Cry (DMC) is a hack and slash action-adventure video game franchise developed and published by Capcom and created by Hideki Kamiya. It follows the demon hunter Dante (Sparda) killing demons and preventing Hell's reach in various games. The franchise alludes to Dante Alighieri's *Divine Comedy*. There are a total of 5 mainline games (excluding the DmC reboot): Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 (...sometimes I wish it wasn't...), Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5. Games 1-3 feature Dante as the protagonist and occasional features of other characters that he meets, such as Trish, Lucia and Lady. Games 4-5 feature Nero (Sparda) as the protagonist with Dante.

Each game follows their own different storylines that I, personally, believe are worth exploring. Because of this, I'd say every single game is worth trying. Each one has its own merits, some less than others (*cough cough* DMC 2 and the reboot *cough cough*) but I think each game has something special to them. I'm in the process of replaying every single game because I bought everything on Steam again, and I've gotten to DMC4 as of writing this!

Why Make a Shrine For It?

Because I like it. It's special to me for reasons that I will delve into in a moment. But also, I think there should absolutely be more spaces on the internet where you display your love for something you like! I only recently discovered Neocities, and I'm taking this as my chance to work on my HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills (much to my dismay). Three.js is such a pain in the ass... JavaScript is a pain in my ass...! I'm terrible at it. But I guess it makes everything worth it when I get things right.

By the way, like what I did with the 3D models? All of them are PS2 save icons! I had a hard time setting up the 3D models and manipulating them. Took me weeks to get the animations working. To people who know how to use Blender and the like, hats off to you. I drove myself crazy learning all this. Credit to Issun and everyone contributing to ps2iodb for storing various save icons from the PS2 era! Couldn’t find them anywhere otherwise. Check out PS2IODB.com!

They all say different lines but the voiceline that plays is always the same, just a heads up.

Why Do I Like It So Much?

As you can tell from making your way here, my entire page is basically a shrine to DMC. I'm about to go into a VERY long ramble of my personal history and attachment to the series, so here's a TL;DR:

I love this series so much. I love the characters, I love the story, and I love the gameplay (even if I'm not good at it). Dante, Vergil, Nero and all the others have a special place in my heart, and I would love to see another game.

Now, the actual ramble:

For the longest time until I was 8, I was haunted by a melody that would frequently show up in my dreams. I would hum it sometimes when I was bored and whenever I remembered it, I would be tormented by the idea that I had *no* idea where it came from. It drove me crazy! There was no Shazam or google app to identify the song just by playing or humming it, and I was too young to be posting on random forums going 'hey guys!1! do u know this song? it goes hm-hmmm-hm-hm'. Just like every other kid, I also liked drawing and making my own characters. I frequently called them Dante and Virgil (with the spelling of the Divine Comedy’s counterpart) without knowing where I got these names. Eventually, I would look it up online on the shared family computer in 2011, and lo and behold, DMC 3 pops up!

I watched someone's gameplay, and I finally found the same melody that was haunting me. It was the choir beginning of 'Devils Never Cry', also most notable in the 'Divinity Statue' track. It felt like I experienced a miracle that day, mouth agape at the age of 8 listening to the song on repeat. Holy shit! I found the source! I fell in love with the game despite never playing it myself because I was too young to. Years passed, skipping to 2013. We traded in all our old games plus the PS3 and the WII, and it reminded me that I never played the previous games. When we bought the Xbox 360, I got the DMC HD collection at a Cex shop (it's the British retailer’s name of the store! this isn't a typo!!) and fell in love with the series all over again. I played through all 3, and I began to love Dante. I thought he was the coolest character ever, and that every single line of his, even if it seemed corny, was so badass! All the cutscenes were awesome. Lady, Trish, Lucia and Vergil were all very lovable to me (less so of Lucia as I didn't really like DMC2 as much). It left a big impression on me, so I ended up getting DMC 4 and then DMC 5 when it came out, both of which I enjoyed immensely! Nero left as much of an impression on me as Dante did, only slightly less if I were to truly compare them.

To reward you for making it this far, you’re probably wondering how I knew the melody of Devils Never Cry in the first place. Funnily enough, I only recently found this out myself. The playstation was my dad’s favourite console, it was only right that he played DMC1 and DMC3 before we traded those in. I was extremely young, probably like 3/4 years old but I heard the choir part so much that I remembered it for years on end as it was burned into my brain. It’s so strange; I experienced infantile amnesia but the song was so iconic that it stuck with me for years. He only recently reminded me that he had actually played through the games so… I finally had the answer to that question!

Hopefully this wasn’t too long of a ramble. But what is a shrine if not the embodiment of the culmination of the joy you find in something? And I get to exhibit my passion to any soul that reads this. I think it’s comforting to think that my love for something is proof of my existence.

Why I love Dante

(Spoilers!)

I think I feel such deep attachment to Dante because of what he represents and how he grows. Someone learning to grapple with his identity and heritage, and having to fight for what he believes in and wants to protect. His responsibility to the human world is the result of being the heir of Sparda’s legacy and wanting to protect people like his mother. He spends most of his life distancing himself from others emotionally. He uses his playfulness and charm to deflect from the significance of his problems. As an older sibling and as a product of diaspora where I have been so far removed from my culture and heritage, I feel as though his experiences mirror my own (minus killing demons, having to fight my brother and traversing hell/hellish locations to stop a greater force of evil).

For a long period, Dante had to live with the idea that every single relationship and meaningful connection he makes to anyone leads to ruins. That is why DMC5 is so satisfying; because he knows he can entrust Nero with this duty and is no longer weighed down by being the sole protector of Earth from Hell. He can reunite with Vergil, where they aren’t diametrically opposed and aren’t attempting to kill each other. I always thought Dante was at his best in every single piece of related media when we saw his relationships to the other characters, after all. That and he’s awesome. The cutscenes prove that!

I love Vergil, his own journey mirroring Dante’s and his pursuit of power leading to his own acceptance of his humanity at the very end. The subtleties of his character and handing Nero his book, the one tie to his humanity, as an act of love and trust. I love Nero. His unyielding effort in proving himself, his love towards Kyrie and the overcoming of his own doubts to become the result of the ‘true power’ that Vergil sought. I always thought that was why Dante had always bested Vergil to begin with; Dante and Nero both had something truly worth fighting for. I love Lady! One of the strongest characters despite being only human and is one of the most pivotal parts in showing humanity through the DMC series. Also all of her outfits are iconic. I love Trish! Her existence alone brings about one of the best lines in the franchise: ‘I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light!’

I love Kyrie, Credo, V, Nico, Lucia, Patty, Morrison, hell, even Arkham and Mundus. I want to say more, but I’m rambling far too long.

Waiting For Another Game...

It’s been several years since DMC5 came out. Another Resident Evil (RE) game just got announced and it’s CRYSTAL CLEAR that Capcom has a habit of neglecting anything that isn’t RE/Street Fighter/Monster Hunter. It’s a little sad to see other IPs just sitting around too.

Like every other fan, I turned to following every single crumb or announcement relating to DMC. I want to talk about the two most notable things that have happened: the Devil May Cry Netflix show, and the Punishing: Gray Raven collaboration.

The show is ass. Straight up UNWASHED ass. I have several gripes with it, but also I just don’t like the showrunner, Adi Shankar. I’ll start with the positives: I like Dante’s design and some of the scenes are cool plus Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante’s VA is pretty enjoyable, I unironically like the music choices (EXCEPT for American Idiot… and the odd renditions of Devils Never Cry and Bury The Light…), the animations was decent and I didn’t mind the CGI and there was a Lucia appearance! However, it sucked. Strange reinterpretations of the characters, a horrible deviation of the game plotlines and I fucking hate this version of Lady, which is something I should *NEVER* be saying! Plus, the political commentary was written so poorly it came off as surface-level and tongue-in-cheek. Season 2 is coming… I am only tuning in to see if they can redeem the whole thing. I really like the 2007 animated show so maybe watch that instead. Might be remembering it with rose-tinted glasses though, because I watched it when I was a kid.

On the other hand, PGR collab is exciting. The combat and combos are replicated extremely well for both Dante and Vergil. From what I’ve seen, the affection dialogue from both of them are nice little insights into the characters and the cutscenes seem amazing. They also brought back Reuben Langdon and Daniel Southworth for the voice acting! Super excited, I have about 20-30k black cards saved which isn’t enough, but I think it should fine.

Silly Extra Tidbits

You don’t have to read this. It’s just filler.

If you’re wondering why the 3D model below is not a DMC character, it’s because it’s my wife, Zhang He from Dynasty Warriors 6. Why is he there? Because there was only 4 DMC special icons made: Trish, Lady, Dante and Jester/Arkham. In other words, I ran out of 3D models to use so he’s there for consistency. Also, ignore the weird attempt at a concrete floor. I can't draw but the floor makes it less jarring to see the 3D models floating in the air.

I think Dante actually affected the type of fictional characters I liked growing up. Anybody with white/silver hair is an immediate plus, a character design for the ages! Is the character a cool demon/monster hunter? Awesome, I now love them. A rivalry that pushes both characters? That’s just Dante and Vergil reskinned, I love it.

I want Dante/Vergil for Smash Bros if they make another game. I was extremely sad that they were only costumes. Also, they need to make an even better Marvel vs Capcom… I need to see the twins in the game again.

This is the second time I've made a sidescroller for a page. I don't actually know why I did that... I thought it was a good idea. If I was better at coding, I would've been much more creative with it.

Final little thing I want to add: why is the fandom so toxic sometimes? People clowning others for not being able to do flashy combos or being less good at the game, older fans harassing potential new fans for liking the Netflix show and not playing the games and just strange discourse around things like shipping. Notably, I only see this on Twitter and Tiktok, so maybe it’s just contained to these platforms.

My Ending Note

I love Devil May Cry. Please play it. Thank you for reading approx. 2100 words of my silly shrine, sorry it was so long. I will polish this way more in the future, so maybe follow me on neocities? Have an amazing day, here's PaRappa waving you bye. Interact with him to go back to the shrine navigation page.
